The elementary schools strive to provide a developmentally appropriate education for each student. Attention is given to basic rules of grammar, phonics, silent and oral reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, composition and writing skills. Manipulatives and meaningful applications of numbers, basic operations, fractions, rounding, geometry, measurement and estimation are used in mathematics instruction. In social studies an introduction is given in history, geography, civics, and cultures of various people. Significant Americans, explorers, Native Americans, holidays, customs, symbols, citizenship, landscape, climate, and map work are studied. In science plants and animals, the food chain, the solar system, rocks and minerals, weather, magnets, energy and motion, properties of matter, safety, hygiene, nutrition, and drug abuse prevention are studied to give elementary students an understanding of themselves and their environment. In the fine arts songs, recordings, musical sounds and instruments, paintings and craft making are used to provide skills and knowledge of our cultural heritage. Physical education is provided to gain skill and knowledge of body control, fitness, sports, games, exercise, and sportsmanship.
Playground improvements have been made. New play structures have been added to enhance play opportunities and improve safety for the students. New computers have been placed in the media center and in the classrooms. The media centers and computer laboratories provide excellent resources to support the curriculum. Technology is becoming an integrated part of the elementary program with the use of Compass Learning and other software. The elementary schools offer small class sizes to enhance learning opportunities and individual help to all students.
